“Community Representation Statement”

 

KOYA-FM 88.1 is licensed by the FCC in Rosebud, South Dakota and with studios located in St. Francis, South Dakota. KOYA-FM, 88.1 serves a large region of listener’s on and off the Rosebud Indian Reservation, located in South Central South Dakota. We strive to serve this same diverse audience with high-quality public media through relevant and unique programming that highlights local priorities to all residents.

 

KOYA-FM 88.1 understands the importance of a strong one on one relationship with the local communities/residents, schools and the entire region KOYA-FM 88.1 serves. Each rural community served is an important source for new and ongoing collaboration. This serves as a basis to focus on creating local news, education, promoting cultural awareness/language, regional programing and music.

 

KOYA-FM 88.1 is an equal opportunity employer. KOYA-FM 88.1 Promotes and encourages the general public, high school student and college students to submit job applications when positions are open. This serves as a data base for potential new employees. Emphasis is also put on working with the local high school students.

 

KOYA-FM 88.1 collaborates with a Community Advisory Board that represents the many communities, and the entire Rosebud region it serves. The Board is an important source providing valuable input on programing, also assists in setting priorities of the community that KOYA-FM 88.1 serves. Our collaboration shapes public service strategies that help in strengthening a positive connection with our audience.

 

KOYA-FM 88.1 programming reflects our unique identity of the Rosebud area, with a focus on local culture and providing essential information. Local/ regional and national news is featured daily.

 

Daily/weekly and monthly announcements will be announced on air-live and recorded for extended dissemination over the air. Hourly weather updates will be provided, and emergency related announcements are broadcast when required.

 

 Cultural programing is featured daily to include language, music, and history. KOYA-FM 88.1 works to engage the youth of the area schools and Region. These include weekly school programs, announcements, and live shows. Public service announcements are recorded and aired that are relevant, including updates on safety, the many community events, and public health concerns.

 

In 2023/24 KOYA-FM 88.1 submitted a CPB/NGWS Grant application and was awarded the Grant. This will assist in upgrades in emergency information dissemination as the information is received through IPAWS. KOYA-FM 88.1 will have several upgrades to include a new HD Transmitter, new HD Antenna, all the additional components and 3 emergency backup generators for the studio and 2 tower locations.

 

KOYA-FM 88.1 will strive to expand coverage, create new partnerships, increase cultural programming and with the Grant upgrades provide improved emergency broadcasting capabilities in a timely fashion.

 

KOYA-FM 88.1 remains committed to adapting and evolving to meet the changing needs of Rosebud and South-Central South Dakota. It is a priority to engage with our listeners, partner with local organizations, and explore innovative ways to serve the Rosebud community while staying true to the mission to provide informative, educational, and cultural content.

 

Our Community Representation Statement will be reviewed biennially to insure it continues to reflect the priorities and diversity of the communities KOYA-FM 88.1 serves.
